The Islands of Hawaii.

We've now had 5 weeks in Hawaii and as usual I'll start with a weather report. Sunshine.
Ok, moving on, Dawn's 92 year old Gramma lit up the island of Kauai with her enthusiasm for life and new adventures. As you can see from the photo Pina Coladas were popular. Thanksgiving was special with 4 generations (all women) hugging and organising the food, I did my bit by eating, drinking and smiling when required. It really was a special day in a beautiful setting, Kauai is our favourite of the islands.

Just a little side note: People say when choosing a wife you should study the mom and gramma to see what your wife will look like in the future, well, ain't I done well............................

Sorry to say I have to question the Kauai airport staff grasp on reality when at Kauai Airport they made Gramma get out of the wheelchair (which had been provided by the airport), walk barefoot and unaided (she has special shoes to help her balance) through the security checkpoint and then stand for an excessively long time with arms outstretched while they scanned her body with the metal detector. We realise checks are necessary, but these were done humanely when we departed from Seattle, where the staff couldn't have been more helpful and understanding, so why not in Kauai? I don't think Gramma looked any more like a terrorist after her 10 days on Kauai, although she had got a bit of a tan......... As usual Gramma took it all in her stride treating it as part of the adventure.

Both accommodations on Kauai were excellent with views from the rooms out to sea. Example below, yes it really was taken from the balcony.

Dawn and I then set off to Maui, which to be honest is not far behind Kauai on the "favourite" island list. We spent the first week relaxing by the pool/beach recovering from "keeping up" with Gramma on Kauai. Dawn has kept active trying to sell her house and buy a condo (in rainy (now snowy) Seattle unfortunately..). Good news is house is sold, condo nearly bought. It's ground floor so the diggers have to clear the snow before Dawn can finalise the deal, I kept telling her to buy on Kauai...........
We continue to be adventurous (some say stupid) as we try and monitor the build of a house in NZ without seeing it, other than photos (one below and if you look closely you can see through the roof the small bay we overlook). As we like doing things "sight unseen" we decided to buy a car in NZ on the Internet, hopefully it will be there when we are....... It's a 10 year old Subaru Legacy estate (my daughter Katrina may eventually forgive me for this lapse into old age) but the pictures shown by the dealer look nice ummmmmm..

Tomorrow we're off to Sydney to welcome in 2009. The weather forecast there is "sunshine" so it shouldn't be too difficult for us to adapt. This is Dawn's first trip to this British outpost, where we used to send some of our more persistent criminals. Dawn's interested in finding out why all the women are called "Sheila" while I'm just keen to get stuck into Australia's "national dish" the meat pie.
We wish all our readers a wonderful, prosperous, fun, happy, relaxing and loving 2009.
